On Wednesday, October 22, 2014, at 6:45 a.m., Operation Shield will kick-off at Fairview Mall parking lot, northeast corner, 1800 Sheppard Avenue East.
Operation Shield represents a joint education and enforcement traffic safety initiative in partnership with:
- Toronto Police Service - Traffic Services and 33 Division
- Ontario Provincial Police Toronto and Aurora Detachments
- OPP Highway Enforcement Team
- York Regional Police Service Traffic Unit
This initiative will be a four-day public awareness and enforcement initiative focusing on drivers in the Greater Toronto Area who engage in the "Big 4" leading causes of death and injury on provincial and municipal highways:
- aggressive driving
- distracted driving
- impaired driving
- unrestrained occupants in motor vehicles
The initiative runs intermittently on the following days:
- Wednesday, October 22, 2014
- Friday, October 24, 2014
- Wednesday, November 5, 2014
- Friday, November 7, 2014
Approximately 30 officers will participate in this event to ensure the highest level of police visibility, in particular during peak commuter periods along both directions of Highway 404 from 16th Avenue in the town of Markham to Highway 401.
Officers will also focus their enforcement and education efforts on driver compliance in the use of High Occupancy Vehicle lanes.
