The Toronto Police Service is pleased to be hosting a graduation ceremony for 89 new police recruits at noon on Wednesday September 10, 2014 at the Toronto Police College, 70 Birmingham Street.

In attendance for this special occasion will be Chief William Blair, Toronto Police Services Board Chair Dr. Alok Mukherjee, as well as the Honourable Yasir Naqvi, Minister of Community Safety and Correctional Services.

The graduating class is representative of Toronto's diverse cultural community and brings a superior level of varied knowledge and abilities to the Service, including language skills, post-secondary education and previous military or policing experience.

The class is comprised of 13.5% women and 34.8% visible minority members. A total of 91% have successfully completed post-secondary education and 20.2% have previous military or policing experience. A total of 56.2% of the class speaks a language other than English, including American Sign Language, Albanian, Armenian, Azari, Cantonese, Croatian, Filipino, French, German, Hindi, Hungarian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Lithuanian, Mandarin, Patois, Persian, Polish, Portuguese, Punjabi, Romanian, Russian, Shanghainese, Sinhalese, Spanish, Tagalog, Tamil, Ukrainian, Urdu, and Vietnamese. Of the new multilingual recruits who speak a second language, 29.2% speak two or more languages other than English.

Thusanth Selvakumar will be making history as the first Youth In Policing Initiative student to graduate as a police constable. After completing the summer program in 2006 at 41 Division, Mr. Selvakumar went on to university and graduated with an Honours Bachelor of Arts degree.

Mr. Selvakumar has said that becoming a police officer has been a lifelong dream and that the YIPI program exposed him to opportunities that he didn't know existed. He also said, "I thought police just arrested bad guys, but I soon learned policing is more than that. As a YIPI, I got the opportunity to visit most of the units and that was what really sold me on the Toronto Police."
