Nine arrests, including four Young Persons, in series of bank robberies

Between Tuesday, July 22, 2014, and Wednesday, August 13, 2014, there were five bank robberies, four in Toronto and one in Markham.

It is alleged that:

- during these occurrences, three suspects entered the banks armed with a gun

- the robberies were a take-over-style robbery

- they would jump over the counters and then take control of the bank employees and customers

- physical force and threats were used to ensure the employees complied quickly with their demands for cash.

- the bank robbers would often switch up their roles as lookouts, or operated the getaway vehicles

- they all are responsible in conspiring to commit the offences.

Five adults and four youths have been charged. A warrant is being obtained for one outstanding Young Person.

Rashawn Smauels, 20, of Ajax, has been charged with:
1) four counts of Robbery while armed
2) Robbery
3) Conspiracy to Commit Robbery


Samuel Smith, 18, of Toronto, has been charged with:
1) Robbery while armed
2) Disguise with Intent
3) Firearm Offences
4) Conspiracy to commit Robbery


Elroy Christie, 20, of Toronto, has been charged with:
1) Robbery while armed
2) Disguise with Intent
3) Firearm Offences
4) Conspiracy to commit Robbery


Karlos Perkins, 23, of Toronto, has been charged with:
1) Robbery while armed
2) Disguise with Intent
3) Firearm Offences
4) Conspiracy to commit Robbery
5) Point firearm


Jaleel Alfred, 22, of Toronto, has been charged with:
1) Robbery while armed
2) Conspiracy to Commit Robbery


A 14-year-old boy, of Toronto is charged with:
1) four counts of Robbery while armed
2) Robbery
3) Assault Disguise with Intent
4) Firearm Offences
5) three counts of Point firearm
6) Conspiracy to commit Robbery


A 17-year-old boy, of Toronto, is charged with:
1) two counts of Robbery while armed
2) Conspiracy to Commit Robbery


A 17-year-old boy, of Toronto, is charged with:
1) Robbery while armed
2) Robbery
3) Conspiracy to Commit Robbery


A 16-year-old boy, of Toronto, is charged with:
1) Robbery while armed
2) Robbery
3) Conspiracy to Commit Robbery


There is a outstanding warrant for a then-17-year-old boy of Mississauga:
1) two counts of Robbery while armed
2) Disguise with Intent
3) Conspiracy to Commit Robbery


The identities of the five Young Persons cannot be released under the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

They were all scheduled to appear in court at 1911 Eglinton Avenue East on Thursday, August 14, 2014, 10 a.m.
