Toronto Crime Stoppers, a collaboration involving the police, community and the media, which began in Toronto in 1984 as a way to solve and prevent crime, received its 100,000th anonymous tip in March 2013.
This major milestone is a testament to the fact that this program works, remarked Torontos Police Chief Bill Blair. The success of Crime Stoppers is primarily due to the media and responsible citizens who deliver information to help police and investigators arrest perpetrators connected to crimes in this city. I also want to acknowledge all the folks who help run this program as well as those who support Crime Stoppers through sponsorship and individual donations. Since, its inception in 1984, tips received through Toronto Crime Stoppers have led to 10,757 arrests, 16,189 cases cleared, 36,102 charges laid, $61,570,644 worth of property recovered and $317,091,642 worth of illegal drugs seized, in addition to the seizure of many illegal firearms.
In recent years, Toronto Crime Stoppers was instrumental in helping investigators make arrests connected to Baby Angelica who was abandoned in a stairwell during the winter of 2008, the beating of a homeless woman on Yonge Street by three teenage girls in 2011, an $18 million drug seizure in 2011 and, more recently, the shootings at the Eaton Centre and Danzig Street.
Gary Grant, Chair and Founder, Toronto Crime Stoppers, said, As one of the most renowned Crime Stoppers programs in the world, were incredibly proud of the work the public, media and police have done to make our city a safer place to live.
Toronto Crime Stoppers is run by a group of citizen volunteers who serve on the Board of Directors to oversee the program. Board members meet regularly to manage and promote the program, raise funds and authorize reward payments. The Toronto Police Service provides a coordinator, Detective Darlene Ross, to manage the day‐to-day operations, police officers to promote the School Crime Stoppers program and staff to take tips called into the Crime Stoppers 222tips hotline. Cash rewards of up to $2,000 are offered to people who contact Crime Stoppers and their information leads to an arrest.
The organization relies on individual donations and corporate sponsorship for its operations. Its largest annual fundraiser is the Toronto Crime Stoppers Ball with Police Chief Bill Blair, taking place on Wednesday, May 8 2013 at the Liberty Grand.
