Man arrested for one count of extortion, Police believe there may be more victims

On Monday, June 9, 2014, police responded to a call for an extortion in the Yonge Street and Eglinton Avenue East area.

It is alleged that:

- a man was shopping in a store when a Loss Prevention Officer intentionally placed a store item into the man's bag, without his knowledge

- the man attended the cash register and paid for his selected merchandise and exited the store

- the man was approached by the Loss Prevention Officer outside the store and was advised he was being arrested for theft under (shoplifting)

- the Loss Prevention Officer demanded money from the man in lieu of contacting police

-the man gave the Loss Prevention Officer a quantity of cash and the victim was released without police being notified

Police believe there may be more victims.

On Wednesday, June 18, 2014, Azeem Khan, 20, of Brampton, was charged with:

1) Extortion

He is scheduled to appear in court at College Park Courts, 444 Yonge Street, on Thursday, June 19, 2014, 10 a.m., courtroom 501.
