Acting Chief Mark Saunders updates media on Projects RX and Battery

On Wednesday, May 28, 2014, in the media gallery at police headquarters, Acting Chief Mark Saunders updated the media on Projects RX and Battery.

Acting Chief Saunders revealed that Project RX was led by the TPS Gun and Gang Task Force, supported by Ontario Provincial Police Provincial Weapons Enforcement Team. This project focused on the Toronto gang Sick Thugz.

Project Battery was led by the Asian Organized Crime Task Force, a multi-agency unit made up of officers from the Toronto Police Service, the OPP, York Regional Police, Peel Regional Police, the RCMP and Canada Border Services Agency and focused on the Asian Assassins gang based in Toronto.

Acting Chief Saunders explained that both gangs are rivals and have been involved in a number of shootings in Toronto.

He said both projects have been ongoing for a number of months.

At 5 a.m. today, 53 search warrants were executed across the GTA, with the bulk in Toronto. Warrants were executed in Toronto, Peel, York and Durham Regions. The agencies assisting during the execution of these warrants included the TPS, OPP, Barrie Police Service, Durham Regional Police Service, York Regional Police, Waterloo Regional Police Service, Guelph Police Service, Windsor Police Service, London Police Service, Hamilton Police Service, Belleville Police Service, South Simcoe Police, Halton Regional Police Service, Brantford Police Service, Niagara Regional Police Service and the RCMP.

So far, more than 50 people have been arrested. Prior to today's takedown, approximately 30 people had been arrested and guns and drugs seized.

Today, nine firearms have been seized, along with large amounts of Canadian currency and cocaine, heroin, marijuana, and two cocaine presses.

Prior to today, as part of the combined investigation, police seized 20 firearms.

Acting Chief Saunders said he anticipated those arrested could face a variety of charges, including Criminal Organization, trafficking firearms, firearms possession, drug trafficking, human trafficking, armed robbery, and conspiracy to commit robbery.
