A husband and wife were arrested for defrauding several insurance companies of life insurance policy money. They subsequently pleaded guilty.

Between 2006 and 2008, Alireza Shojaei, 45, purchased several life insurance policies totaling $3.525 million. The beneficiary of the husband's life insurance policies was his wife, Koukab Shojaei, 41.

In 2008, the husband and wife travelled to Iran, where the husband supposedly died of a heart attack. The wife initiated the death-claim process with each of the insurance companies to receive the benefits of his life insurance policies.

This triggered an investigation of the death of the husband by the insurance companies, who could not confirm his death. In June 2009, while the claim was still under investigation, the wife started civil litigation against the insurance companies, claiming damages in excess of $10 million

In September 2010, the insurance companies settled an insurance payout with the wife in the amount of $1,010,000.

On Thursday, September 16, 2010 Alireza Shojaei entered the United States at Los Angeles International Airport, from Iran through Rome, Italy using his Canadian passport that was supposedly returned to the Canadian Consulate in Iran.

In November 2010, the wife purchased a US$ 420,000 house in Mission Viejo, California with the insurance payout.

The Toronto Police Service began the extradition process when it learned that the husband was alive and well in California.

The insurance companies involved are London Life Insurance Company, Great-West Life Assurance, Desjardin Financial Security Life Assurance Company, State Farm International Life Insurance Company Ltd.

The husband, Alireza Shojaei, 45, was charged with:
1) four counts of Fraud Over $5,000

The wife, Koukab Shojaei, 41, was charged with:
1) four counts of Fraud Over $5,000
2) Uttering a Forged Document

The husband and wife subsequently pleaded guilty.

Police believe there may be more victims.
