The Toronto Police Service would like to make the public aware of two arrests in an Elder Abuse/Fraud investigation.

It is alleged that:

- a 94-year-old woman, living on her own, hired a housekeeper approximately four years ago,

- over the years, the housekeeper's role expanded to assist the woman with the activities of daily living

- some time in 2014, the housekeeper said she and her family were going to move back to their native country, and they wanted the woman to move with them

- the woman agreed and assisted them financially with the move

- in March 2014, the housekeeper's family, including her husband and two young children, moved in to the woman's home

- they displaced the woman to a smaller bedroom, and sold off much of her furniture and jewellery

It is further alleged that:

- the financial assistance amounted to the majority of the woman's life-savings

- the housekeeper never had any intention of emigrating with the woman

On Wednesday, March 26, 2014, a suspicious and concerned citizen called police. Police conducted a wellness check and, as a result, arrested two people.

The housekeeper, Vera Nunes, 32, and her husband, Luis Serpa Da Conceicao Santos, 38, both of Toronto, are each charged with:

1) two counts of Mischief - Under ($5,000)
2) Mischief - Interfere with Property

The investigation is ongoing.

They appeared in court at College Park on Thursday, March 27, 2014, 10 a.m., courtroom 507,

The Toronto Police Service would like to acknowledge the actions of the citizen who showed concern for a stranger.

Police believe there may be other victims.
