The Toronto Police Service would like to make the public aware of an arrest in a fraud/impersonation investigation.
It is alleged that:
- between February 2012 and October 2012, the accused introduced himself as a Toronto police officer and produced a police badge
- he would provide victims with information that he was currently suspended from duty and required funds to help him with court fees
- he also advised victims that he could assist in obtaining a Canadian Residency Card or would be able to assist the victim with obtaining Permanent Resident Status
- in one case he requested money for an emergency
On Thursday, October 24, 2012, Di Yu, 27, of Toronto was arrested by 52 Division officers for:
1. Personating Peace Officer
2. Possession of Property Obtained by Crime
It is further alleged that:
- a police badge was seized from the accused at the time of his arrest
After this arrest, two additional victims came forward to police.
On Wednesday, March 27, 2013, Di Yu, 27, of Toronto, also known as Jason Yu and Jason Yudi, was arrested and charged with:
1. two counts of Personating Peace Officer
2. Theft Under
3. Fraud Under
4. Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Under
He is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday, May 9, 2013, at 1000 Finch Avenue West, room 301, 1 p.m.
Police believe there may be other victims. A photograph of the man has been released.
