The Toronto Police Service would like to make the public aware of a number of vehicle thefts in the Scarborough area.

It is reported that:

- 55% of the vehicles being targeted include Lexus RX350, Toyota SUV and Honda CR-V models

- these vehicles are often stolen from residential driveways in the overnight hours

Security camera videos of the suspects in action, as they break into the vehicles to reprogram new blank key fobs, have been released and can be viewed on YouTube here.

Car owners can take the following steps to help protect their vehicles:

- consider any deterrent that will prevent thieves from targeting your vehicle, such as a steering wheel club

- park in a garage, if possible

- consider covering the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) located on the dashboard at the bottom of windshield

- consider purchasing a secondary vehicle alarm system

- consider adding a tracking device to your vehicle

- consider leaving keys in a container that will block the key fobs signal

- do not leave key fobs near the front door of your home overnight. Leave the keys as far away from the front door as possible

- notify police of any suspicious activity

Investigators are available today between 11 a.m. and noon for media interviews at 42 Division, 242 Milner Avenue:

Detective Sergeant Jesse VanNest, 43 Division

Detective Gavin Jansz, 42 Division

Please email Constable Caroline de Kloet at Caroline.deKloet@torontopolice.on.ca for interview requests.
