The Toronto Police Service would like to provide the public with an update on a poisoning investigation.
On Sunday, March 7, 2021, police and the Ontario Coroner’s Office commenced an investigation into the death of three-year-old child.
It is alleged that:
- a man accessed a controlled substance from his place of employment
- the controlled substance was placed into a children’s breakfast cereal
- two children consumed the breakfast cereal, during a sleep over
- both children required hospitalization
- one of the children due to the consumption of the cereal, died in hospital
- the other child recovered after a lengthy hospital stay
On Saturday, June 19, 2021, Francis Ngugi, 45, of Toronto, was arrested. He is charged with:
1. two counts of Administer Noxious Substance to Endanger Life
2. two counts of Unlawfully Cause Bodily Harm
3. Criminal Negligence Causing Death
He is scheduled to appear in court at Old City Hall, on Sunday, June 20, 2021 at 10 a.m.
