Arrest made in distraction thefts and robberies, Two men and a woman face 11 charges, Investigation ongoing

On Monday, February 17, 2014, at 3 p.m., three people were arrested and charged in an ongoing distraction-theft investigation.

It is alleged that:

- the accused drove around seeking potential victims

- once a victim was identified, one of the accused would approach the victim under the guise of requiring assistance or directions

- the accused would then put fake jewelry on the victim as a gift, while using sleight-of-hand, and remove the victim's real jewelry

- the victim would be unaware that the theft had occurred

- one of the victims, a 72-year-old woman, resisted their efforts and the accused used force against the woman, leading to a robbery

Three people have been arrested, however their names are not being released at this time as the investigation is ongoing.

Charged are:

A 27-year-old man, charged with:

1. three counts of Robbery
2. Theft
3. Conspiracy to Commit an Indictable Offence

A 35-year-old woman, charged with:

1. two counts of Robbery
2. Theft
3. Conspiracy to Commit an Indictable Offence

A 39-year-old man charged with:

1. Robbery
2. Conspiracy to Commit an Indictable Offence

The accused appeared in court at Old City Hall on Tuesday, February 18, 2014.

Do not delay in calling police and do not be embarrassed. The details of this occurrence need to be reported immediately. The faster police are able to respond, the better the chances the suspects(s) will be arrested.

In an emergency, meaning a crime in progress, call 9-1-1. For non-emergency situations, call 416-808-2222.

Memorize suspect(s) physical and clothing descriptions, especially tattoos, scars and other prominent features.

When trying to determine age, height, weight and appearance, compare them to yourself or people you know.

Your safety is more important than any possession. Never chase or follow a suspect.
