More than 10,000 tickets were issued to road users as part of a Back to School and Bicycle Safety campaign.
Between Tuesday, September 8, 2020 and Wednesday, September 30, 2020, Toronto Police Service focused on school zones across the city and popular cycling areas, including #ActiveTO road closure areas to educate and remind drivers, cyclists and communities about traffic safety.
Officers focused on “The Big 4” behaviours that are known to cause injuries to people using our roads and identified drivers who were speeding, driving aggressively, driving while distracted and driving while impaired.
See previous news release.
Additional engagement, education and enforcement continued beyond tickets issued.
Tickets issued to all road users included:
Speeding –7,138
Aggressive –2,651
Distracted –318
Impaired –110
In total, over 10,000 tickets were issued with speeding (7,138) the most common violation.
Police Constable Jenelle Higo thanked all those who helped spread the traffic safety messages.
She said: “All road users need to consider the safety of our most vulnerable users: school children, pedestrians and cyclists. As students and their families settle back into the school year after a very long break, I want to remind everyone to pack their patience not just the schoolbags, slow down and keep your eyes on the road.”
It’s important that we all continue the conversation and remember road safety is a shared responsibility.

Toronto's Vision Zero Road Safety Plan acknowledges that collisions are inevitable but that killed and seriously injured (SKI) collisions are preventable and unacceptable. Zero injuries and deaths on our roads is the number that we all should be working towards.
