On Monday, December 16, 2013, starting at 7 a.m., at the intersection of Bathurst Street and Finch Avenue West, Toronto Police Service Traffic Services, along with 32 Division officers, will embark in a one-day pedestrian/driver safety education campaign entitled, "Do The Bright Thing!"

This campaign will directly engage the public, to promote wearing reflective or bright clothing when possible, and to heighten public awareness of pedestrian and driver safety. All road-users will be subject to various awareness, education and enforcement initiatives.

The need to be aware, alert and visible at all times on any road, even in the most routine circumstances, is a key component to ensuring a safe arrival at your destination. This applies to pedestrians, drivers, cyclists and transit users.

Pedestrian deaths on our roadways have been representing a greater percentage of all traffic fatalities. Over 100 people have died in pedestrian-related collisions in Toronto over the last four years.

We ask those who drive, to take extra care before setting their vehicle in motion. A driver who is aware and alert can avoid potential hazards, mistakes and other distractions.

Pedestrians should be alert when walking upon the roadway and, in parking lots, ensure whenever possible that they are seen by motorists. Wearing brighter clothing or reflective materials can increase a person's visibility when interacting with other road traffic.
