On Thursday, May 16, 2019, at 10:00 a.m. at Ontario Place, the Canadian Safe Boating Council (CBSC), the Toronto Police Service Marine Unit and the Ontario Provincial Police (O.P.P.) hosted the media to kick-off Safe Boating Awareness Week 2019.

The Victoria Day long weekend is considered by many as the unofficial start of summer. The goal of this event and Safe Boating Awareness Week is to decrease the number of boating fatalities by educating the public as they begin their boating season with the knowledge and key boating safety tips to help ensure that every trip is a round trip.

This year, the theme was “Prevention Partners with Enforcement.” This is a reminder that together boating safety stakeholders, law enforcement and media can make a significant difference on the water making it safer for all Canadians.

The announcement focused on five key boating safety messages:

1. Wear Your Lifejacket
2. Boat Sober
3. Be Prepared – You and Your Vessel
4. Take a Boating Course
5. Be Aware of Cold Water Risks & Cold Water Immersion
