On Tuesday, September 11, 2007, shortly before noon, 16-year-old Dinesh Kumar Murugiah was with several friends who had congregated in a laneway at the southwestern corner of Sir Winston Churchill Collegiate Institute at 2239 Lawrence Ave. E.
The laneway travels from the school’s parking lot to Flora Drive.
“Dinesh and his friends were planning on leaving the school grounds for lunch when a male approached them from the Flora Drive direction,” says Detective Sergeant Stacy Gallant. “The male suspect walked directly up to Dinesh, words were exchanged and the suspect started swinging a knife at Dinesh. They grappled, both of them fell to the ground and, sometime during the encounter, Dinesh was stabbed in the chest.”
The suspect fled out of the laneway to Flora Drive and was last seen getting into a 1994 Black Honda Civic. The vehicle drove away in a southerly direction.
Murugiah died later in hospital.
Police believe the suspect may still be in Southern Ontario.

Homicide investigators would also like to reconnect with family members and friends of Murugiah who may have more information.
