On Wednesday, December 13, 2017, at 1 p.m., at Church of the Holy Trinity, 19 Trinity Square, 51 Division, in conjunction with the Councilfire Aboriginal Elders and the Downtown Yonge BIA, will be celebrating the Walkabout Program's Second Aboriginal Feast.
A hot dinner will be served and items of warmth will be handed out.
The Walkabout Program is designed to build relationships between police and the Aboriginal community. The program pairs three officers with Elder Andrew Wesley and several other elders as they walk along Yonge Street, along the laneways, alleyways and parks, engaging members of the Aboriginal community they meet.
This gives members of the Aboriginal community the opportunity to see Elders working hand in hand with the police for one common goal. Supportive services are offered and any questions are answered honestly and in an open forum. Topics of discussion include survivors of Residential Schools, The Sixties Scoop , Family and Addictions. The program has been in effect since June 2016.
The Downtown Yonge BIA has been instrumental with their support and supply gift cards for the elders as an honorarium.
