The Toronto Police Service would like to inform the public of an arrest made in the investigation of several arsons in the Junction area.
Between October 6, 2017 and November 29, 2017, officers responded to a number of fires in the Junction area.
It is alleged that:
- several fires were set to garbage bins and furniture
- some furniture was located on the front porches of homes
- these fires caused thousands of dollars in damage
- one fire caused first and second degree burns to one person
On Thursday, December 7, 2017, Makoons Meawasige-Moore, 20, of Toronto, was arrested. He is charged with:
1. Five counts of Arson Causing Damage to Property
2. Two counts of Arson Having Disregard for Human Life
He appeared in court at Old City Hall on Friday, December 8, 2017, at 10 a.m., in room 101.
During the investigation officers worked in conjunction with the Toronto Fire Service by holding a Town Hall meeting to educate the public on arson and fire prevention, conducted door-to-door canvassing and had heightened police patrols in the affected areas.
