TPS 42 Division officers, in conjunction with ProAction Cops & Kids, Morningstar Christian Fellowship and the 42 Division Community Police Liaison Committees is sponsoring the 4th Annual Project Fresh Air Venture.
The 4th Annual Project Fresh Air Venture runs between Monday, July 22, 2013 and Saturday, July 27, 2013 at 10 Hood Road in Huntsville, Ontario.
The group will be returning back to 42 Division on Saturday, July 27, 2013, at 3 p.m., at 42 Division, 242 Milner Avenue. The media is invited to attend and speak with the participants after they return from their trip.
Each year, Constable Mark Gray from 42 Division, plans and organizes an event called Project Fresh Air. This program started four years ago with approximately 25 youth, between 11 and 14, from 42 Division's priority neighborhoods being given the opportunity to attend a week-long outdoor adventure camp at Camp Widjitiiwin in Muskoka. Camp Widjitiiwin is a several-hundred-acre property where Constable Gray, along with other neighbourhood officers, has the opportunity to interact and build positive relationships with the kids by spending time canoeing, hiking, biking, rock-climbing, team-building exercises, confidence-building exercises, cliff-jumping and swimming.
In addition to the outdoor activities, officers also deliver lectures and interactive programs which focus on life skills, cyber-bullying, conflict-resolution, drugs and the importance being a positive role model in the community. Each year 42 Division's Youth in Policing Initiative summer staff attend the camp as well and assist by working alongside the camp counsellors and the officers.
This program has been a huge success. It has strengthened the relationship between the police and youth in 42 Division, provided an opportunity for youth from Toronto's priority neighbourhoods to have an outdoor experience like no other, and has even provided job opportunities as some youth have gone on to be employed as camp counsellors the following year.
Each year, the youth requesting to attend this program grows and grows and this year is no exception, with just over 100 kids having signed up so far, including 12 youth from the Danzig community.
This program would not be possible without the support from generous sponsors such as ProAction Cops & Kids, Morningstar Christian Fellowship Centre in Malvern and 42 Divisions Community Police Liaison Committee and Chinese Community Liaison Committee.
